Post from Empowered Wealth Ambassador Jay Paterson
Our country has suffered a very difficult week.
Two of our valiant soldiers, Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent and Corporal Nathan Cirillo were murdered in two separate and quite cowardly incidents this week.
And one long serving member of the public, Sergeant-at-Arms of The House of Commons Kevin Vickers was forced to defend our nation, and our parliamentarians, by fatally shooting a well-armed murderer in our own Houses of Parliament.
Warrant Officer Vincent was innocently crossing a parking lot while his murderer waited for two hours in his car, waiting for an opportunity to fatally injure any soldiers who crossed his path. Warrant Officer Vincent Did, and was run down in a “hit and run” in the parking lot.
Corporal Nathan Cirillo stood, unarmed, doing his volunteer tour as a Guard at the Tomb of The Unknown Soldier, just outside of our House of Commons. The Tomb of The Unknown Soldier is a revered place where Canadian soldiers have stood guard and honoured the unidentified fallen from all of our wars, 24 hours a day, year round, since World War I. Corporal Cirillo was murdered by a man with a concealed shotgun, killed as he honoured his fallen brothers. The murdered then proceeded to attack our government in The House of Commons.
Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin Vickers was in the House of Commons when Corporal Cirillo’s murderer attacked the House of Commons with a huge shotgun, wounding an unarmed guard at the doors to the Parliament Buildings. Sergeant-at-Arms Vickers learned what was happening, went to his office, retrieved his weapon, a pistol, and dispatched the assailant.
Each of these three men, and the wounded guard, was simply doing his duty in service of all other Canadians, and all other men and women of peace, when attacked.
An office, a role, a duty, and a task we are all of us profoundly grateful for.
The men and women in service of our country, of our people, of our nation and of our nationhood, do so with honour.
These wonderful citizens are those who sacrifice, willingly, selflessly, on behalf of all of us, to make our country, and for that matter each of our countries, such a wonderful place to live in.
A Grandfather, A Dad, A Brother, A Friend, A Proud Citizen, and a Son and Grandson of good soldiers.
