The loudest sound in the universe…is silence – Thelonious Monk, Hall of Fame Jazz…

The loudest sound in the universe…is silence – Thelonious Monk, Hall of Fame Jazz Musician

In the early 1980’s, I was introduced to a ground rule:  “speak with good purpose”.  This idea originally came from a native American Rolling Thunder.  Over the years, it’s seemed to be a worthwhile rule but I’ve had trouble implementing it consistently because it’s somewhat vague and offers no additional guidance.

Recently, I came across a bit of advice from blogger Shane Parrish that I’ve been attempting to apply to my daily activities.  It has to do with listening and responding; it applies in situations where I’m considering whether or not to say something.  And it follows this acronym:  T.H.I.N.K….as in

“THINK” before you speak.

T stands for “TRUE”?  So I’d ask myself, is what I’m about to say truthful?

H stands for “HELPFUL?”  In other words, will what I’m about to say be helpful?

I stands for “IMPROVE on silence?”  Here’s where the Thelonious Monk quote above resonates with me.  In other words, is it better left unsaid?

N stands for “NECESSARY?”  Do I need to say this?  Why?

K stand for “KIND?”  Is what I’m about to say spoken in the spirit of kindness or is it mean-spirited?

I’ve found that this little saying “T.H.I.N.K. before you speak” is helping me become a better person.  It’s helping me speak with good purpose.

What do you “THINK” about this?
