Although this blog post by +Simon Sinek is over a year old, I immediately identified strongly with it because of my own personal experiences with the hypocrisy of public financial services companies. More to his point, when our actions are so incongruent with our "why" – our core ideals, our reasons for what we do and who we are – shame can be the result. Yet, in the spirit of #empoweredwealth , couldn't he ask, "How can I be better the next time I'm tempted to accept a similar engagement?"

At #empoweredwealth we often use the analogy of a bee pollinating other plants while seeking nectar. It's an effect called "precession", the unintended byproduct of an activity. The article below points to the absence of precession, the unintended byproduct of the lack of an activity (i.e., the impact of bees not pollinating). OR perhaps it's the negative precessional effects of the overuse of pesticides?

Jobs or Wisdom?

The argument presented in the blog post below is that there are technology jobs available but that college doesn't prepare graduates to qualify for these jobs. Therefore, colleges should train students for these technology jobs. The blog post points to e-learning as a promising bypass of what I'll call the existing military-industrial-educational complex. The author calls out to "put these schools…in their places" and "start focusing on career education, not the Greek philosophy."

Is wisdom no longer relevant? Is learning and thinking now reduced to job-related skills? I would posit that jobs skills AND thinking skills AND wisdom are essential to achieve a life well-lived, a life of sustainable prosperity.

Think Greek philosophy is a waste of time? I challenge anyone to read this post from the blog of +Tim Ferriss and the say honestly that there's no value in Greek philosophy:

Making "Mission" More Real

This article by Yanik Silver provides a well-intentioned but hard-to-follow prescription for a profitable and meaningful venture. He describes this as "mission". Ever since business school 30 years ago, I've always thought of "mission" as an academic construct, somewhat divorced from the "real" world. It's the sort of platitude-rich document you see on the wall in the waiting areas of offices (Enron had one of the best mission statements). #empoweredwealth takes a somewhat different approach with the Empowered Wealth Mindset; specifically linking gratitude with contribution and living legacy, and reframing financial assets as value creation. Rather than 5 tips, we're advocating a whole new way of thinking and approaching life.

Does Every Entrepreneur Really Want to Sell Their Business?

Ordinarily lists like this don't interest me. However, the second item "money means little to them" caught my attention because of the recent attention focused on baby boomer entrepreneurs selling their businesses. The author of this article focuses on people he considers "real" entrepreneurs but I believe there are other entrepreneur/business-owners who focus on autonomy and independence in order to devote time to family and/or other pursuits. It's the difference between "lifestyle" or "work/life balance" entrepreneurs and what Dan Sullivan calls 10x entrepreneurs (those who are passionate about maximum growth).

Could it be that not every entrepreneur wants to sell their business?

Our Concept of Leaders and Leadership is Shifting

This article based on an extensive global survey points to some fundamental shifts in the way we're collectively viewing leaders and leadership. Yesterday, +Arianna Huffington led a conference The Third Metric that focused on many of the same issues mentioned in this article. It appears that at least in the way people are responding to surveys, our concept of leaders and leadership is shifting away from money, power, winning, etc. However, my thought is that it's really a reaction against ways of thinking that have dishonored and disrespected large segments of the population and defined "success" as winning in warfare (literally and symbolically). It's being "against" that way of thinking. But there's more to it than just being against something. It's not enough to be in favor of more balance or focused on "well-being". New leadership is about getting there, showing people the way, creating the future.
